The Story of the Saint

Saint Mercurius of the Two Swords (Abu Seifein)

This icon depicts Saint Mercurius, one of the most powerful warrior saints in Christian history, famously known in Arabic as Abu Seifein ("The Owner of the Two Swords").

  • The Two Swords: He is shown heroically mounted on a black horse, triumphantly holding two crossed swords above his head. According to tradition, while serving as a Roman soldier, an angel of the Lord appeared to him, handing him a second, divine sword of immense power to defeat his enemies, while commanding him to remember God.

  • Defeating Julian the Apostate: The figure shown fallen on the ground beneath his horse represents Julian the Apostate, the Roman Emperor who persecuted Christians. Years after Mercurius's own martyrdom, it is held that Saint Basil prayed before an icon of the saint, and Mercurius miraculously left the icon to strike down the tyrant on the battlefield, restoring peace to the Church.
