The Story of the Saint

Saint Pishoy, the Beloved of Our Good Savior

This icon depicts Saint Pishoy (Anba Bishoy), one of the most revered desert fathers of the Coptic Orthodox Church, famously known as the "Star of the Desert."

• Carrying the Lord: The icon illustrates the most famous miracle from his life. Tradition holds that an elderly, weary stranger asked the monks of the desert for help walking. While others passed him by, Saint Pishoy gladly carried the old man on his shoulders. As he walked, he noticed the stranger becoming lighter, and suddenly recognized wounds in his hands—it was Jesus Christ Himself.

• The Incorrupt Body: Because he physically carried the Savior, Coptic tradition holds that Jesus blessed his body to remain completely incorrupt. To this day, his body remains preserved without decay at the Monastery of Saint Pishoy in Wadi El Natrun, Egypt.
