The Story of the Saints

The Fathers of Monasticism

This icon depicts one of the most famous meetings in Christian history between Saint Paul the Anchorite (left) and Saint Anthony the Great (right), the founders of Christian monasticism in the Egyptian desert.

• Saint Paul the Anchorite: Having lived in complete solitude in the desert for decades, he is shown clothed in woven palm leaves. According to tradition, two lions (seen at his feet) helped dig his grave when he passed away.

• Saint Anthony the Great: The Father of All Monks, shown in his monastic habit holding a staff and a scroll.

• The Raven: Visible at the top, a raven was sent by God daily to bring Saint Paul half a loaf of bread. On the day Saint Anthony visited him, the raven miraculously brought a whole loaf to feed them both, symbolizing divine providence.
